Norris Grows Through Diversification, Customer Service
By Ken Arnold
November 8th, 2002 - Wichita business Journal
Tracy Norris, DC, has a relatively simple formula for success; Study the market, be willing to change as needed and provide great customer service. While applying that formula involves plenty of work, it has worked for Norris. During the past three years, he has seen revenues of his company, Norris Enterprises, grown 205.67 percent.
Three Businesses
Norris Enterprises encompasses three separate businesses: Norris’ chiropractic clinic that opened in 1989; Pain Relievers, an online business launched in 1997 that sells pain gels, lumbar pillows and cushions, massagers, braces and other therapeutic supplies; and Computer Furniture Sales, an online office furniture business Norris started in 1998. All three businesses are housed at the company’s new facility at 2081 N Webb Road. The company employs five people, including Norris and his wife, Lisa. Norris says all parts of the company have grown over the past year, with Pain Relievers growing at a rate of about 50 percent, Computer Furniture Sales at 100 percent and the chiropractic clinic by about 40 percent. Norris credits much of his success of his online businesses to volume marketing. Over the past few years, he has cultivated a large international clientele for Pain Relievers by offering products to physicians, pharmacies, hospitals and drug stores at just above dealer cost. He has taken the same approach with the furniture business and now supplies large quantities of furniture to school districts, local and state agencies and the military. “We don’t make a lot of money on each sale,” Norris says. “But we make a little bit of money a lot of times.” Norris attributes the growth of his chiropractic clinic to the attention he gives his customers. Norris says he provides high-quality customer service, including in-depth evaluations to determine the cause of patients’ problems. “I find and treat the problem, then redo the evaluation to see if there are any changes,” Norris says. “That’s why my patients like my care.”
Opportunities
Norris adds that he is always looking for new ways to expand his business. Pain Reliever has recently branched out into two areas; one that offers retail products and another that offers massage therapy equipment to massage therapists, clinics and spas. Norris has also recently added another business called Pillow Menu that supplies a variety of different style pillows to luxury hotels that want to offer options to guests. Within the past six months, he has landed an account with the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia. In the future, Norris also plans to expand his furniture business to include a complete line of office products such as computers, printers, paper and office supplies. “I never feel satisfied,” Norris says. “There are so many more opportunities out there.”
